Nestled somewhere between earth and tide, this handcrafted skink bowl by Kate Hepburn carries the quiet beauty of the natural world. Salt fired in a traditional kiln, the surface has developed a soft, weathered glaze — rich with speckled textures and subtle variations that can never be repeated exactly the same way twice. Each firing leaves its own trace, making every bowl entirely individual.

Effortlessly edging along the rim of the bowl, a small hand-sculpted skink appears to pause mid-journey, bringing a sense of movement and life to the piece. Subtle yet full of character, the skink feels naturally at home against the earthy clay body, as though it has emerged from the landscape itself. In many traditions, skinks and lizards symbolise renewal, adaptability, and a deep connection to the land.

The bowl’s shallow organic form balances function with sculpture, making it equally suited for serving, display, or as a standalone ceramic artwork. The salt firing process allows flame, ash, and minerals to interact freely across the surface, creating soft flashes, natural textures, and atmospheric tones unique to this firing alone.

Made slowly and intentionally, this piece reflects Kate Hepburn’s appreciation for natural forms, traditional ceramic techniques, and the quiet imperfections that give handmade work its soul. No two bowls are ever alike — each one carries the marks of fire, clay, and the artist’s hand.
